The formidable Claire Sulmers, the ingenious creator of the hugely successful online fashion site, Fashion Bomb Daily came to London this weekend for the first ever prestigious Cocktails With Claire hosted by Popfresh London. The event kicked off at the glamorous Eaton Square Bar in Belgravia, where a room full of fashionistas clad head to toe in the latest trends and fashion items from Guiseppe Zanotti shoes to Chanel and YSL shoulder bags, awaited the arrival of the Queen of Fashion Blogs.
I arrived slightly, fashionably late, rushed passed security and straight into the venue where I was met with a room full of mostly women who were fixated on the woman of the moment before them. I hastened to a halt as I entered the room in an attempt to avoid breaking the apparent silence and causing anyone’s gaze to lower and look upon me in frustration at disturbing this present moment.
As my eyes turned to gaze upon the figure who had fixated their gaze, I was too, as dazzled by her as they were. Stood in an iridescent multicoloured stripe shirt/wrap dress that cascaded down and streamlined her curves with a split that ran just high enough to show off her beautiful tanned legs was Claire Sulmers. Being that I had devoured her entire book The Bomb Life a few weeks back, she looked familiar as I knew her story. Claire is not only a New York editor and writer that’s forged a successful career going from Harvard, to working at both Paris and Italian Vogue, Newsweek, Essence and New York magazines, to sleeping rough on a bath tub, working with Diddy and partying amongst the likes of Beyoncé – and that’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. She launched The Fashion Bomb in August 2006, tipped as the ‘daily destination for the multicultural fashionista. From celebrity style to fashion news, trend reports to street style, the blog delivers fresh, engaging content from an informed point of view.’ As stated on Claire Sulmers personal website.
The Fashion Bomb has since amassed 2.4 million monthly visitors, and has not only made Ebony Magazine’s 2011 Power 100 List, Claire has also won numerous awards such as, Black Blogger of the Month by Black Enterprise, as well as being penned the Blogger of the Moment by Teen Vogue magazine. Other coveted awards include, Best Fashion & Style Blog in the 2009 Black Weblog Awards and featuring on the list of Signature 9’s 99 Most Influential Style Blogs. Claire also boasts achievements such as, Blogger of the Year at the Style Blogger of Color Awards in 2012. A firm and respected figure in the fashion industry, The Fashion Bomb has been cited in a vast selection of high profile news media and magazines from New York Magazine,Glamour, and Time. If that wasn’t enough, Claire is also a frequent contributor to the renowned InStyle.com and Vogue.it, and her Fashion Bomb Daily instagram profile alone boasts in excess of 1.2 million followers worldwide, that includes A list celebrities, entertainment companies, sites like the Shaderoom and high profile industry personel.
Claire spoke candidly about her road to success and risk taking along the way, with bumps and turns from being the only black girl at a lot of events and companies, dealing with rejection and critiques about anything from her hair to her style,to then being overlooked for her strengths, strategic insights and business acumen within the fashion industry. She has a very down to earth personality, which made her presence even more endearing to all the guests in the room. Not only did she take the time to sign copies of her book, she also spent time speaking to most, if not all attendees, from posing for selfies and stories to numerous genuine embraces with air kisses and two steps in between.
The DJ on the night was Mercedes Benson who kept the energy flowing and ‘tun up’ popping with throwbacks to the dope tracks of the moment. It was most definitely an evening well spent with the fashion bombs of London and the biggest, boldest most bodacious fashion bomb that is Ms Claire ‘Fashion Bomb Daily’ Sulmers. What’s next you ask? Well she’s taking her ‘ Cocktails With Claire’ event global with the next stop being Lagos, Nigeria, with a follow up to her first self published book in the pipeline, you will soon be reading ‘Claire Sulmers – From Harvard to Hollywood’.
